You remember the scene. At least, I hope you remember the scene. It’s hard to forget it. Mad Men. Season five. Episode nine. Michael Ginsberg, a young copywriter at Cooper Draper Price, has an ad pitch all ready to go, but his boss Don Draper humiliatingly dumps his idea and successfully sells his own idea instead. On the long elevator ride back to the office, Ginsberg gets more and more pissed off as Draper blithely brushes him off. As the doors open, Ginsberg mutters, “I feel bad for you.” Draper, missing no beats, replies, “I don’t think about you at all” as he leaves the elevator. Boom. One of the coldest lines in prestige TV history.
