There’s a truism that the best moshers at hardcore shows will usually make the best singers in hardcore bands, and bald Scottish monster Shaun Alexander, leader of the Glasgow heavy hardcore crew Demonstration Of Power, offers up some strong evidence for that case. Alexander is a gravity-defying ninja both onstage and off, and his otherworldly bellow works great for DOP …

Frankie Cosmos used to be Greta Kline’s solo project, but it’s turned into something else. Next month, Frankie Cosmos will release Different Talking, their first album as a full-on four-piece band. We’ve already posted lead single “Vanity,” and now they’ve followed that song with “Bitch Heart,” a new song that starts out as soft, humming bedroom-pop before turning into a …

When Alien Boy first started playing shows in 2018, venues had no idea how to handle their fearsome three-guitar setup. Seven years later, the Portland music scene is inundated with loud, young rock bands, some of whom (including Growing Pains and Rhododendron) had members mentored by singer Sonia Weber at Portland’s School Of Rock. Yet Alien Boy’s sound remains distinct, …

Last month the London-based indie pop band Allo Darlin’ shared “Tricky Questions,” their first new music since their breakup in 2016. Now they’ve announced a full album on the way: Bright Nights arrives in July, and today Allo Darlin’ have shared another single called “My Love Will Bring You Home.”

Matt Berninger has been singing for the National for decades, but he’s his own man, too. In the weeks ahead, Berninger will embark on his first-ever North American solo tour, and he’ll also release Get Sunk, the new album that he made without the other National guys. We’ve already posted the lead single “Bonnet Of Pins” and the Hand Habits …

Lifeguard, the young Chicago trio who brilliantly channel the arty, noisy post-punk of the late ’70s and early ’80s, will release their Matador debut album Ripped And Torn about a month from now. Lead single “It Will Get Worse” elicited a strong endorsement from us, and today’s new track is similarly great.

Last year, the legendary Americana musicians Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, two longtime collaborators, released the joint record Woodland, which won the Grammy for Best Folk Album. Last night, Welch and Rawlings were musical guests on Stephen Colbert’s Late Show, where they got a chance to show how they can cast a spell. I get why musicians like Welch and …

It’s been a little while since we’ve heard from Lawn, the New Orleans duo of Mac Folger and Rui De Magalhaes. After the release of their 2022 EP Bigger Sprout De Magalhaes moved to Chicago and released a solo album under the name Rui Gabriel. Now, the two members of Lawn are back together, and they’re getting ready to head …

Cola is the trio of ex-members of the broken-up Montreal post-punk band Ought, and things have been awfully hectic for those guys lately. Cola released their sophomore album The Gloss last year, and frontman Tim Darcy saw his home destroyed in the Los Angeles wildfires earlier this year. That apparently hasn’t slowed things down for Cola, who are about to …

In 2023, Marcus Brown shared the debut Nourished By Time album, Erotic Probiotic 2, but he’s stayed busy since. The Baltimore musician released collabs with Kevin Abstract and evilgiane, dropped an EP called Catching Chickens, and was revealed as part of the lineup for this year’s Outside Lands. Now, he’s announcing his sophomore effort The Passionate Ones, arriving in August.
