We’re two days away from the start of Coachella, the gigantic music festival by which all other gigantic music festivals are judged. The lineup poster came out back in November, and we already took a deep journey into the font sizes contained therein. Coachella’s organizers recently unveiled the set times and made some last-minute lineup tweaks, adding Ed Sheeran and …

Here’s a good line: “If I knew a good thing every time that I’d said I knew a good thing, then I wouldn’t be a member of this firing squad.” Here’s another good line: “I am totally finе with the use of my picture in your pamphlеts if, in turn, you will paint me like your piglets.” Both of those …

Great news: Not only is there a new Sorry song out today, it samples Guided By Voices. “Jetplane” weaves Robert Pollard’s vocals from Bee Thousand banger “Hot Freaks” into a slinky, sinister, bass-driven track the likes of which this band has always done so well. After hearing them interpolate “Hey Mickey” on last fall’s “Waxwing,” I’m now wondering what a …

Last year, the former Wednesday guitarist Mark Jacob Lenderman released Manning Fireworks, his breakout solo LP. It was one of our favorite albums of 2024, and it turned Lenderman into an indie-level star. “Wristwatch,” the single that arrived just before Manning Fireworks, might be the most quotable song that Lenderman has yet released. It’s also the one with the most …

Who’s ready for a seven-minute indie roots-rock ramble? “First It Was A Movie, Then It Was A Book” is the opening track from Florry’s recently announced Sounds Like…, and what an introduction it makes. The song surges along through waves of pedal-steel-fried Southern guitar rock, breaking away from the jam session occasionally for some revved-up Francie Medosch vocals.

Smerz are building toward the release of new album Big City Life, and today the Scandinavian surrealists have graced us with another track from the LP. “Roll The Dice” takes Smerz’s smeared-lens Lynchian sing-song into the realm of crisp hip-hop breakbeats. It’s hard to tell how genuine or ironic they’re being when they talk-sing, “You’re a girl in the city …

Jazz guitar experimentalist Mary Halvorson is following up last year’s Cloudward — which we liked quite a bit — with a new album called About Ghosts. Due in June via Nonesuch, it pairs Halvorson with producer John Dieterich, best known as guitarist for Deerhoof. (Deerhoof coming in hot today with Saul Williams and Mary Halvorson linkups!) Her band is one …

Greta Kline has announced a new Frankie Cosmos album. Different Talking, the follow-up to 2022’s Inner World Peace, arrives in June, and its lead single “Vanity” is out now.

Last month, Deerhoof announced their new album Noble And Godlike In Ruin. So far we’ve heard “Overrated Species Anyhow,” “Sparrow Sparrow,” and “Immigrant Songs,” and today they’re back with “Under Rats” featuring Saul Williams.
