Fraternal Twin went nearly a decade without releasing any new music, but that long absence has suddenly ended. The New York indie band is back this week with “Evil Eye,” their first new song since 2016’s Homeworlding (not counting a demo that popped up on a benefit compilation this year). The track creeps along with a bit of a languorous …

Sir Richard Bishop is about to drop another slab of American primitive fingerstyle guitar goodness upon us. The Portland-based performer will release his pleasingly titled new album Hillbilly Ragas on ye olde Drag City in September. Its opening track, “They Shall Take Up Serpents,” also is well-named, and man, can this guy shred. Crucially, Bishop’s acoustic guitar virtuosity serves the …

At long last, the End It album is nearly upon us. Baltimore hardcore face-rippers End It have been doing their thing since the pre-pandemic days, playing crazy shows and cranking out abbreviated bursts of nastiness. Just off of a couple of EPs and a whole lot of live shows, they’ve become enough of a hardcore sensation that they will soon …

Toronto artist Debby Friday is a few weeks away from releasing her sophomore album The Starrr Of The Queen Of Life, and it sure seems like she’s going all-in on dance-pop with this one. Around here we’re pretty big fans of Restraining Order, the Massachusetts-based band who put a great contemporary spin on early hardcore punk — perhaps you recall my esteemed colleague Tom Breihan’s valorous, laudatory claim that “Restraining Order made [him] piss blood.” Just two years shy of their previous record Locked In Time, today they’ve announced its follow-up Future Fortune. Before …

The UK multi-instrumentalist Sarah Cosgrove started Low Girl as a solo project when she was a student at Lincoln University — presumably the one in the English town of Lincoln, not the HBCU in Pennsylvania. Eventually, Low Girl grew into a full-on four-member band that includes Cosgrove’s sibling Tom on drums. Low Girl released their debut EP Big Now in …

Softcult, the duo of twin Toronto siblings Mercedes and Phoenix Arn-Horn, earned Stereogum Band To Watch honors back in 2023. We’ve continued to watch them since then, and they have continued to crank out extremely pretty guitar music without releasing a proper album. Lately, they’ve been operating one single at a time, and now they’ve followed the last one, April’s …
