It always sucks when you discover a cool band and then that band immediately breaks up. But on the other side, it’s cool when that band then suddenly returns. Maybe they were gone for such a short period that you barely had time to miss them. Maybe they return with a brand-new surprise album. With all that in mind, Dog …

Lambchop’s newest song is the story of a family struggling through the Great Depression. You’re intrigued, aren’t you? You should be. For many years, sole permanent Lambchop member Kurt Wagner has brought tons of gravitas to his lush country-rock songs, so you already know you want to hear him use that voice on a subject that demands such gravitas. The …

One of our very favorite albums of 2025 was Burnover, a big breakthrough for the Burlington, Vermont indie rock rambler Greg Freeman. It’s a work of deeply felt country-rock choogle that earned Magnolia Electric Co. comparisons, and it earned Freeman a whole lot of momentum. Today, Freeman announces All Set The Bone, his first album as a full-time musician. The …

It’s amazing to hear how much noise two people can make together, especially if those people are both wigged-out avant-garde virtuosos. You probably already know about Colin Stetson, the baritone sax master who has recently turned toward scoring tense films like Hereditary and The Menu. Stetson is a born collaborator; earlier this year, he released Nethering, the album that he …

Cécile McLorin Salvant is not a jazz singer. That’s probably why I like her work so much. The post Cécile McLorin Salvant’s Breathtaking Orchestral Album appeared first on Stereogum.

Ned Collette has been kicking around some of the most potent corners of the underground for decades now. The Australian-born, Berlin-based singer-songwriter got his start in the instrumental post-rock band City City City but quickly moved on to wide-reaching singer-songwriter albums under his own name, which for a few years were credited to Ned Collette & Wirewalker. In recent years …

Many, many years ago, the idiosyncratic, art-damaged Albany project Self Defense Family emerged from the ashes of the hardcore band End Of The Year. It’s hard to even describe Self Defense Family; it’s basically a revolving-lineup collective that functions as a de facto solo project for sole permanent member Patrick Kindlon. When Kindlon started leading Drug Church around 2013, that …

Hey, you know what’s a good song? Motherfucking “Svefn-g-englar,” the deathlessly beautiful 1999 classic from Sigur Rós. I’d read a whole lot about Sigur Rós before I finally bought an import copy of the Ágætis Byrjun CD for like $20, and that’s a heavy burden to put on a hyped-up new album. That time, though, the hype was justified. I …

Theoretically, Nick Hakim makes soul music, but it’s more like visiting spirit music. The Queens-based polymath, a trusted collaborator for figures as disparate as Adrianne Lenker and Lil Yachty, can be heard on many kinds of records. But he may be doing his finest work in his own catalog, crafting spectral R&B songs with sound design so immaculate it becomes …

On Saturday night, the country superstar Morgan Wallen played the second of two shows at Baltimore’s M&T Bank Stadium, the place where the Ravens play. Ella Langley, this year’s dominant hitmaker, was one of the opening acts. These shows were big occasions, and they brought many thousands of people together. One of those people, at least according to a fellow …
