Hey, it’s my birthday today! I am so old. That’s OK. It means I have a lot of memories. Some of those memories involve Black Eyes, the percussive DC skronk-punk greats. Back in the day, I went to a ton of Black Eyes shows, and they were just unbelievably exciting. Now, the band is back together, and the title of …

Last month, Ouri teamed up with Charlotte Day Wilson for the shimmering track “Behave !” Now, the Montreal producer and multi-instrumentalist is announcing her new album Daisy Cutter. The title track is out today.

Every year, a panel of British musicians, producers, journalists, and other music-business figures gets together to award the Mercury Prize. The award recognizes one album from the UK and Ireland every year, and its results have had momentous results in lots of careers, starting with Primal Scream’s Screamadelica in 1992. I am just the right age so that my first exposure to “Blue Monday” was Orgy’s nu-metal remake, so the New Order hit strikes me as such an intuitive cover choice that we might as well call it a standard. The National’s Matt Berninger has been covering lots of extremely popular songs on his tour in support of new solo …

You might even argue that “Yellow,” the band’s 2000 breakout hit, was a cheesy moment in itself. I loved it, though. Wisp doesn’t remember any of that …

One of the coolest things about witnessing Turnstile’s rise has been watching the band figure out how to play music intended for a specific context — the type of hardcore show where so many people stagedive that two different divers often land right on top of each other — in different situations, like giant festival stages or late-night talk shows. …

Margaret Glaspy’s covers EP The Golden Heart Protector arrives this Friday. We’ve only had one taste of it with the New York-based singer-songwriter’s take on Wilco’s “Jesus, Etc.” with Norah Jones. Now she tapped James Bay for Nico’s Jackson Browne-penned “These Days,” which we coincidentally just heard Emily Hines cover yesterday.

In The Alternative Number Ones, I’m reviewing every #1 single in the history of the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks/Alternative Songs, starting with the moment that the chart launched in 1988. This column is a companion piece to The Number Ones, and it’s for members only. Thank you to everyone who’s helping to keep Stereogum afloat.
