It’s official: Ella Langley’s monster country smash “Choosin’ Texas” is in a chart-history class of one. “Choosin’ Texas” first reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 back in February — already an amazing feat for a relatively untested performer, especially in country, where radio famously gives short shrift to female artists. Other songs have knocked “Choosin’ Texas” out of the …

Nothing about the Australian singer-songwriter Julia Jacklin really screams “Las Vegas,” but that’s where Jacklin shot the video for her new song “If I Had The Hand Of God.” This was a very good decision. For the clip, regular collaborator Nick Mckk filmed Jacklin wandering around Vegas — a voyage that encompasses the Sphere, the Caesar’s Palace ceiling, the windswept …

The very name “Primitive Blast” implies a brief but explosive existence. You probably don’t pick that band name if you expect to last a long time. The Australian hardcore crew Primitive Blast has been around for more than a decade, which would seemingly undercut that band name. But Primitive Blast still play like a band called Primitive Blast; it’s hard …

It was a weekend of adjustments, solid pitching and a strong response for the JK Select NY 17U team at the Blue Chip Invitational on Long Island. Both solo and as a member of projects like Palberta and My Idea, Lily Konigsberg used to be a prolific force in indie-pop, so it’s surprising that today’s new single marks her first release in four years. We’re glad to have her back in action. “Free Byrd” is a pop song with a skip in its step. There’s some real …

Let’s talk about the Militarie Gun double-grunt. I first heard it as “oof oof” or maybe “roo roo,” but apparently it was always “ooh ooh.” I know this because they printed “ooh ooh” on the back of a T-shirt once. That sound is Militarie Gun’s catchphrase, their signature. When they play live now, they build up to every “ooh ooh,” …

Do people ever confuse the young Philadelphia shoegaze crew Bleary Eyed for the post-Oasis Liam Gallagher band Beady Eye, or is that just me? For their entire existence, I kept thinking of Beady Eye as “Bleary Eye,” and now there’s a Bleary Eyed. This might be what finally pushes me into the “OK grandpa, let’s get you to bed” phase …

Sometimes, indie rock types write music for dance performances, and it’s usually pretty fair to slot that music into the minor-works category of their discographies. Nobody is like, “Yeah, Illinois is cool, but I think Sufjan Stevens’ best shit is the music that he writes for ballet.” This is not how you should think of the new Perfume Genius single …

Here’s what’s happening right now: I bet you’re looking at this blog post headline like, “oh huh, I bet that was cool.” No. Stop thinking like that. It’s fucking awesome. Don’t keep this open in another tab like “I’ll try to watch it later today.” This is not one of those situations. This is a drop-everything alarm. You and I …

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from the proudly messy Philadelphia DIY crew Empath, but they’re still going, and we think of them fondly. We recognized their last LP, the 2022 sophomore joint Visitor as an Album Of The Week. Empath haven’t released any new music in a few years, but they toured earlier this year. They haven’t broken …
